Our District Team

Sheila Howard  – District Commissioner

“I started my Scouting career 5 years ago whilst looking for a Beaver place for my son. Unable to secure one, I decided to open my own Group in 2017 and became an assistant Beaver Leader and Group Scout Leader for 1st Beckenham South.

A year later I opened the Cub section and last year the Scout section. During those five years I also became a Trustee for Bromley District Executive Committee, the Assistant District Commissioner for Penge and Beckenham Groups and an active member of the District.

Although my Scouting history may be relatively short, my career in Girl Guiding is much longer, having held positions as Snowy Owl, Tawny Owl, Brown Owl twice and a Guide leader.

Outside of Scouting I work as a nurse consultant where I manage a team of 12 staff across two hospitals and a local community in my role of Deputy Director of Infection Prevention and Control. I am a senior manager with leadership and management qualifications at Masters level.

I am looking forward to the challenge of being the new District Commissioner for Bromley Scouts and hope in time to meet you all”

Alys Helm – Deputy District Commissioner (Group Support)

Alys has been in Scouting 20 years, ABSL, BSL, Leader in Charge and GSL of 3rd West Wickham. Also served on appointments committee for several years and a Training Advisor.

Born in Cudham Youth Hostel quite a long time ago and have now returned to live in the village, likes gardening, walking, reading and cooking.

A little known fact – Alys flew with Dr Who (Peter Davidson) and the Tardis to Lanzarote – but did go in a plane from Gatwick. She is also a Pilates instructor and Health Coach.

Tom Norris – Deputy District Commissioner ( Events)

I first started in Scouting at the age of 11 at the 5th Bromley and have never looked back (or managed to escape!). After moving from Scouts to Explorers to Network I have also held a number of adult roles including: Network Chairman, Scout Leader and District Executive Committee member. Soon I will be adding to Cub Scout Leader to that list too!

I have the pleasure with having a fantastic group of volunteers working with me on the Youth Events Team; without them none of my crazy ideas would come to light.

Outside of Scouting I have a love for Land Rovers and a slightly larger love for my wonderful wife Naomi (whom I met through Scouting!) without her letting me out to play the great Scouting game I’m not sure I would know what to do with myself!

HM King Charles III has been confirmed as our new Patron, a great honour for UK Scouts.

The King continues a long tradition of the monarch giving their Patronage, dating back to 1912. This was when Scouts was granted its Royal Charter and HM George V became our first Patron.
